Portland YouthBuilders

March 13, 2014 by director Leave a Comment

I’m loving YouTube videos as a way to stay informed about the organizations we’ve worked with over the past decade and a half.  Two came through my inbox this week from Portland YouthBuilders.  They’ve been plugged into our grant process since 2001 and I did one of my very first site-visits with the grant committee at their facility.  Most recently we helped them with a project to initiate a green building component into their construction program, training youth in green building theory and techniques to improve their employment opportunities.  What a great support for youth — both academically and vocationally!

Hitting the Slopes

February 14, 2014 by director Leave a Comment

We’re now well into ski season and whenever I get a chance to hit the slopes I think fondly of time spent on the mountain with my grandfather, Dean Papé.  He loved nothing more than leading his 14 grandchildren down a run followed by a mid-morning hot chocolate and donut break.  His passion for skiing was outweighed only by a desire to see each of us succeed in life.   Service, hard work, family and fun were the values he taught by example — exactly what our work at the Papé Family Foundation is built on and what inspires the Service Board.

the Service Board is a Seattle-based organization started by “a group of local activists decided to create a program where young people could come together to laugh, dream, think, and explore the true meaning of community” (tSB web site).  Last year PFF helped tSB purchase cameras, computers and software that enables students to explore video production.

With their newly honed skills and equipment, a small group of youth received a paid internship to conduct interviews on leadership development and present a video for the executive team at Rudy’s Barbershop in Seattle.  Pretty cool!

But back to the slopes.  tSB also encourages teens to work through the challenges they face by spending time outdoors.  Our local news team in Seattle, King 5, featured a tSB snowboarding adventure.  I loved watching the youth get out in the snow and enjoy one of my favorite childhood activities.  Thanks tSB, for giving teens the chance to learn new skills and have fun!

*PFF is currently accepting applications for our 2014 Grant cycle.  Deadline to submit is March 1, 2014.  Forms are available on our grants page.

Sprout!

December 13, 2013 by director Leave a Comment

I was very excited to hear from Sprout! in Springfield last week.  Local food systems is currently my area of study in grad school and I love getting updates about work being done in the northwest to encourage farmers markets and community kitchens.

Sprout! is a regional community food hub serving Eugene and Springfield by providing a location emerging entrepreneurs and a year-round farmers market.  They approached PFF during our 2012 grant cycle to request financial assistance to purchase kitchen equipment for their new community kitchen.  The Neighborhood Economic Development Corporation (NEDCO) was able to purchase an old church in 2011 to house a regional community food hub and support a year-round farmers market, hence Sprout! was born.

What happens at the kitchen?  Check out this recent media feature! (Sprout! is featured  from 0-2:20min, 6:30-7:30min, 17-18:30min)

Thanks NEDCO/Sprout!  for your commitment to healthy and vibrant communities!

Interested in partnering with the Papé Family Foundation in 2014?  Check out our grant guidelines and then fill out our 2014 application.  Deadline to apply is March 1, 2014.

Philanthropy in Action

November 20, 2013 by director Leave a Comment

Grant-making has always been my favorite part of our family foundation.  It’s pretty simple, really.  We’re require by law to give away a certain amount of money each year.  Family members reach into our communities and invite organizations to help us with our annual distribution.  They apply for a grant, we collect all the applications and the grant committee carefully sorts through each one.   At our annual meeting the committee makes a recommendation to the trustees and we usually select 5-7 organizations to partner with.  Checks are written to those non-profits to support a specific program need and in return we get periodic updates with stories and photos.

I received one such update just last week.  FEEST (Food Empowerment Education Sustainability Team), a Seattle organization, received a grant in 2012 to help produce their training manual so that other cities across the country have a model for building community through cooking.  In honor of Food Day 2013, FEEST was featured in a Huffington Post Blog!  Read the blog and watch the 3 minute video about FEEST here.  Inspired?  Our 2014 grant application will be available soon (deadline to apply is March 1)!
